WYLLIES DOUBLE-DOUBLE

Two goals and two assists for Wyllie as Rangers win at Broadfields United

Bob Rayner reporting

The score-line certainly didn't reflect a game where Broadfields United were in contention for much of the contest. Risborough Rangers emerged four-one winners in the end but they were made to work very hard for their victory at Rayners Lane, with a late flurry ensuring the points. Rangers started the first half well, with the opening twenty minutes belonging to the visitors. In the first minute they should have taken the lead after Bailey Osborne raced past the United right back and squared to Marcus Wyllie who had the goal at his mercy, yet somehow Rangers' top scorer put the ball wide from a yard out. It was an incredible miss by the normally reliable finisher. Shortly after Osborne again beat his man after a good ball from Keiron Schmidt, this time his low angled effort was cleared off the line. At the other end Rangers skipper Josh Urquhart was on hand to head clear a dangerous free kick. Two minutes later and a long range strike from United was pushed over the bar by Jack Brooker, the resultant corner cleared by Asher Yearwood. Rangers took the lead in the 11th minute; a superb ball inside the full back by Adam Morris set Osborne away and this time Wyllie made no mistake, finishing Osborne’s low cross from close range. Rangers continued to press and a skilful run from Schmidt ended with the midfielder shooting just wide. United reacted with a break down their left finishing with a poor shot, well wide. Bertie Squire-Adams and Schmidt combined well to set up Liam Enver-Marum, his shot striking the crossbar. On 20 minutes Morris again picked the perfect pass, this time finding Wyllie, whose excellent first touch and finish made it two-nil. The expected collapse of the home side never materialised however, as United enjoyed a good spell up to halftime; firstly a well struck long range effort was tipped over by Brooker. Next, following some good build up play, a low cross fizzed across the Rangers goalmouth. 15 minutes before the break and a well taken free kick dipped over the Rangers wall, clipping the top of the crossbar. There followed a couple of long range efforts that were easy for Brooker and on the stroke of half time the Rangers keeper tipped over a 30 yard screamer.

The second half continued with some end to end action with Rangers launching an early attack, Squire-Adams missing from Wyllie's cross. United pulled a goal back via the penalty spot in the 47th minute after Lewis Patrick was adjudged to have fouled in the area; it looked harsh but the penalty was awarded and dispatched. Rangers rallied and a neat move culminated in Wyllie's shot blocked by a superb challenge. Next up and Patrick's free kick cleared the wall and skimmed the top netting. Rangers win a corner shortly after and Morris picks out Yearwood at the far post, who headed home what he thought was Rangers' third, the referee however made Rangers take it again as he wasn't ready! At the other end Alex Kedzierski was on hand to make an excellent clearance as Broadfields threatened. Rangers hit back with Osborne’s flick finding Wyllie, his great strike excellently tipped onto the post by the United keeper. Broadfield countered and Brooker also pulled off a good save to maintain his teams slender lead. Rangers' previous Tuesday night efforts on a quagmire of a pitch began to take its toll on some tired legs and manager Mark Eaton took the opportunity to introduce some fresh legs with Ben Sturgess, Gavin James and Sean Coles having a huge impact as Rangers regained control. Sturgess especially brought some much needed composure in the middle of the park. Schmidt's clever pass found James who nearly scored, chipping over the advancing keeper onto the roof of the net. Ten minutes from the end United forced a corner, headed wide from a good position. It was the host's last real chance as Rangers pressed to put the game beyond doubt. A warning of what was to come saw Wyllie pick out Coles who fired into the side netting. With six minutes to go Coles won the ball deep in the United half, threading the ball to Wyllie. Wyllie went past two and squared to James for a simple finish from five yards. Five minutes later and the referee awarded a penalty to Rangers following a challenge on James, but to everyone's confusion then reversed the decision, awarding an uncontested drop ball to United. It was a bizarre moment that left all and sundry puzzled. Seconds later and it didn't matter, as Rangers got a fourth, returning the United clearance Schmidt clipped the ball into Wyllie who held off a strong challenge before volleying a shot. The ball appeared to be going just wide until Coles threw himself in to prod the ball home with virtually the last kick of the match.

A good win on the road against a team that gave it their all. The difference was in the finishing as Rangers carved out some great chances, limiting their hosts to mainly long range efforts. The players have a week to recover now before they take on Crawley Green at home next Saturday. Kick off at the BEP Stadium is 3pm.

Rangers Man of the Match: Marcus Wyllie. A constant threat all game despite an opening minute miss that he will want to forget. Two goals, two assists, says it all really.
