RANGERS HIT A BRICK WALL

Scoreless draw with Hadley as Rangers battle with ten men in second half.

Report by Bob Rayner

With the Divisions three top goal-scorers on show at the BEP Stadium on Saturday one could have been forgiven for hoping for a goal-fest. Hadley's Solomon Ofari and Jordan Edwards plus Risborough's Marcus Wyllie have 67 goals between them, with Wyllie leading on 26; yet neither team could find the net in a very competitive game. Rangers started brightly and a good run by Lewis Patrick saw his pacey cross finding the side netting. Sean Coles then crossed from the right with the stretching Keiron Schmidt just a toenail away in front of goal. Hadley came back with some neat play and Aaron Jewell was on hand to clear a dangerous cross. Eight minutes in and Rangers should have taken the lead when Coles raced through onto Marcus Wyllie's header before poking the ball wide of the onrushing keeper and just wide of the post. Next, a neat passage of play from the home side saw Alex Kedzierski pick out Schmidt with just the keeper to beat, the skilful midfielder chipping the advancing keeper and again the ball bouncing agonisingly past the post. Some good work by Asher Yearwood and Wyllie ended with Kedzierski volleying wide. Liam Enver-Marum then set up Wyllie in another one versus one, the keeper saving well, low to his right. At the other end Josh Urquhart blocked a fierce shot before Yearwood too, snuffed out an attack with a timely tackle as Hadley grew in confidence. Ofari was inches wide with a low shot and soon after the same player turned in the Rangers box to fire straight into the hands of a grateful Jack Brooker in the home goal. Coles was again put through with the keeper to beat, only to be denied by another good save. Moments later and Patrick's near post effort was also well held. The half ended with a couple of Ranger's corners and Schmidt's shot desperately cleared off the Hadley goal-line.

The second half saw Hadley force a series of corners as they restart well, and eight minutes in Rangers are reduced to ten men after Coles received his marching orders for a foul. It was the beginning of a resilient performance from Rangers as they re-grouped, with the midfield trio of Ben Sturgess, Schmidt and Kedzierski working tirelessly to stop their opponents gaining the upper hand. The second half saw few chances with only Schmidt's free kick flashing across the Hadley goal-mouth, a shot across the Rangers goal from Ofari and a routine near post save by Brooker off Edwards, of note. In the closing minutes a Hadley free kick was easily dealt with by Brooker whilst at the other end Patrick's run on goal was ended with a fine tackle before Hadley survived a dangerous moment when Schmidt and Gavin James appeared to get in each others way, allowing the visitors to avert the danger. A draw was probably a fair result and Rangers won't be too disappointed with a clean sheet after playing most of the second half with ten men. They will however rue the missed gilt edged chances in the first half and will be hoping to find their shooting boots in time for next Saturday's home fixture versus Harefield United.

Rangers Man of the Match: Josh Urquhart. The skipper didn't put a foot wrong all game. Calm in possession, good distribution, dominant in the air and timed his tackles to perfection. A calm head when it was needed and a masterclass in defending.
