Bob Rayner reports on this South Bucks derby win
Flackwell Heath made Rangers graft all the way for this narrow win at the BEP Stadium last Tuesday night. This closely fought local derby was settled by a first half goal from Rangers' Sean Coles in a game where the home side never looked at their best. Credit should go to the visitors, who put up a good display, playing some fine football at times. Rangers were missing several players due to illness or injury with Manager, Mark Eaton forced to shuffle his pack again. In a game of few chances Rangers were out of the trap early with Liam Enver-Marum shooting just over after a good run. Asher Yearwood then made a good run down the right, his cross turned away for a corner. Flackwell hit back with dangerous cross missed by all. The visitors soon followed this up with Thomas seeing his shot parried by Rangers keeper, Jack Brooker, with Drifill firing the loose ball wide. The Heathens looked threatening on the break with their pace forcing Rangers onto the back foot. It was against the run of play that Risborough took the lead in the 23rd minute. Enver-Marum held the ball up well before laying off to Coles whose low shot found the far corner. The goal lifted the home side as they pressed for another. Rangers suffered a blow soon after when skipper, Joel Read, was forced off through injury, but Borough continued to press. Coles headed over from a corner and then Heath's keeper, Hay, made a very good save off Enver-Marum. Another Rangers cross just evaded the outstretched foot of Coles before Enver-Marum fired a fierce effort over from the angle. The same player then shot across the face of the Flackwell goalmouth, this time it's Marcus Wyllie that couldn't turn it home. Enver-Marum was again involved as half time loomed, setting Yearwood up; the latter firing wide.
Rangers continued the second half where they left off, forcing an early corner. Heath could only clear to the edge of the box to the waiting Wyllie, who squeezed his shot just wide. Sam Pekun then attempted a first time hit on the volley which almost hit the corner flag! 65 minutes and Heath threatened, with Yearwood blocking a dangerous strike with a timely tackle. At the other end Enver-Marum beat his marker to shoot into the side netting. Heath came back with a dangerous cross, Josh Urquhart forced to clear with a flicked header. It was the visitors turn to pile on the pressure now, as they enjoyed a good spell. A rare break by Rangers saw Enver-Marum battle his way through three challenges before being denied by the onrushing keeper. Back in the Risborough penalty area the home defence were caught flat footed as Drifill's snap shot fizzed wide. A minute later and the referee was forced to retire with an injury, his place taken by one of his assistants. A call went out for a volunteer lines-man and fortunately there was a spectator in the 202 crowd qualified to step in. With the game back underway, Enevr-Marum and Wyllie combined well to set up Coles who shot straight at the keeper. Heath weren't finished and Brooker gathered the ball at the second attempt following a good shot. Rangers were forced deeper as they looked to hang on to their slender lead. The final few minutes saw the home side manage their way to another victory with some experienced play.
The reaction of the Rangers players at the final whistle showed how much the result meant to them. A hard earned three points as they now look to Saturday's big game at home against high flying Harpenden Town. Mark Eaton will be hoping that his skipper's injury is not too serious and he will also be hoping for the return of some of his other squad members as the consequences of so many games in a short space of time takes its toll.
Rangers Man of the Match: Liam Enver-Marum. Involved in virtually every Rangers attack, Liam was a constant threat. His strength and pace caused problems for the visitors all evening and his hold up play was invaluable when Rangers needed some respite.
