A CRUCIAL WIN AT LAST!

Two early Rangers goals ensure points at Hilltop

Bob Rayner reports

Rangers recorded a first win under new boss Kevin Christou when they travelled to Beaconsfield to play Hilltop. The hosts made Rangers work hard for the three points with some skilful approach play whilst enjoying a fair share of possession, but some impressive defending limited Hilltop to mostly long range efforts after the visitors raced into an early two goal lead. In the first minute Rangers' Arel Amu couldn't quite connect with Jeremiah Luwero's great cross. It didn't matter though, because a couple of minutes later Amu finished superbly after robbing a defender on the edge of the box, smashing the ball home from 12 yards. Another good cross by Luwero soon after saw Lewis Horn-Hayes miscue his effort with the Hilltop goal at his mercy. After six minutes a great move by Rangers saw the ball worked to Alex Awobimpe 10 yards from goal and his deflected strike found the net to give the visitors a two goal lead. On the quarter hour mark Rangers' Joe Fitzgerald's pass picked out Luwero whose well hit shot was held by the Hilltop keeper. Ten minutes later and Fitzgerald himself shot just wide from 20 yards. Hilltop then came into the game with some neat football. A deflected shot was well held by Rangers' new keeper, Lemar Johnson. With Hilltop pressing, a series of corners followed, with one half cleared corner smashed back against the foot of the Risborough post. Thirty minutes in and Rangers should have made it three following good work by Amu and Horn-Hayes, Kyle Matthews close range effort somehow cleared off the line. Hilltop hit back with a shot over from just inside the box before a great double save by Johnson meant Rangers kept their two goal lead. The closing minutes of the first half saw Hilltop in the driving seat as they hit the side netting after a good move down their right, then a free kick was fired into the Rangers wall, Fitzgerald clearing the loose ball. A good save by Johnson followed moments later, skipper Josh Chamberlain also clearing the danger before, on the stroke of half time, another save from Johnson at his near post ensured Rangers went in for the break two goals to the good.

The second half saw far less goal-mouth action as Rangers sat back and hit on the break, defending solidly. An early, well worked corner for Risborough found Matthews on the edge of the Hilltop box and his well hit strike was blocked. Hilltop followed this up with a shot from distance high and wide. 13 minutes into the half and a long fierce drive by Hilltop fizzed wide of the foot of Johnson's post. Soon after, Fitzgerald headed clear a Hilltop corner, the loose ball volleyed high over. A deep Rangers free kick was punched away by the Hilltop keeper under pressure from Amu. Another half chance for Amu was tidied up by the Hilltop defence following a good move by the visitors. The final minutes of the half saw Hilltop shooting from distance with Rangers defending deep and assuredly as they managed the game to a well earned victory. It has been clear to see that Christou is building a competitive side over the last few performances, with Rangers improving each game. His new signings have began to show what they can do and an understanding is building. Rangers look to have found a goal-scorer in Amu and they have a resilience defensively. With those around them in the table all losing on Saturday this win was important. Rangers are at home next Saturday when they entertain Wokingham Town at the Kamtech Stadium. Kick off is 3pm.

Rangers Man of the Match: Joe Fitzgerald. Playing in midfield, Fitz worked his socks of in this game, popping up all over the place breaking up opponents play, winning the ball and starting attacks. A full on performance that showed his energy and will to win.
