Heavy defeat leaves Rangers in precarious position
Bob Rayner reports
Just as I said in my Milton United report, Rangers might have fancied picking up at least a point from Tuesday's game at home versus Wallingford. The visitors had lost the same amount of games as Rangers and had won just three games more, leaving them four places above Riz in the table, yet on Tuesday evening's showing, the gap looked far wider than the league table might have suggested. Wallingford ran out comfortable winners by five goals to nil as Rangers showed a defensive ineptitude that was only matched by an equally depressing impotence in front of goal. Saturday's heartening cup win over Cobham last Saturday was soon forgotten when Wallingford's Taylor rifled home a low shot from distance after just two minutes. Eight minutes later a short corner by Wallingford ended with a shot fired straight at Connor Coulson in the Rangers goal. At the other end a half chance for Ezinna Odimgbe flew high over the visitors cross bar. Wallingford doubled there lead in the 22nd minute when a good run and low cross was turned in at the near post by former Ranger, Haydon McConnell. Three minute later and Williams added a third with a great finish from the edge of the box. It was saddening to see a couple of Rangers fans leave at this point. Mohamed Ihid almost pulled one back when he dribbled into the area before hitting the visitors crossbar with an angled shot. Wallingford ended the half with a quick break and shot wide of the far post.
The first 15 minutes of the second period was a pretty drab affair with neither side playing well. Things livened up in the 62nd minute when Rangers right back, Steve Wade, received a straight red card for a badly timed tackle; there could be no arguments. Not for the first time this season, Rangers faced an uphill struggle with only ten men, and with the home side producing nothing as an attacking force and former Rangers man, Ellis Hercules in dominant form at the back for Wallingford, it was a case of hanging on. A series of corners from Wallingford were then dealt with, only a weak effort for Coulson to deal with. Coulson did well minutes later with a decent double save following a good move. He could do nothing about Wallingford's fourth however, when Bonner dribbled through several weak tackles to score in off the post. Coulson again made a good save, parrying an awkward strike, the loose ball falling to Wallingford substitute, Watson with an open for the miss of the season! It didn't matter though because in time added on, Wallingford did get a fifth; Rangers defenders, thinking the ball was heading for a goal-kick, left it for Wallingford's winger to keep the ball alive, crossing low across the face of the goal for Avery to side foot in from a foot out. It summed up Risborough's evening and much of their season. Wallingford, whose slim relegation worries are now over, can look forward to returning to the Kamtech Stadium in the quarter final of Premier Challenge Cup (date to be decided), whilst Rangers will need to beat fellow strugglers Edgware & Kingsbury away on Saturday and bottom club Wembley the week after to stay up. It's ironic that we should be in this position having received our Step Five Ground Grading Certification from the FA this week. Tense times!
