Alie's Wembley Double

Rob Cairney6 Apr - 12:02

Bangura brace ensures three points in huge relegation battle.

The sun was out at Wembley's Vale Farm ground as bottom club Wembley lined up to face second bottom Rangers in this six pointer of a match. A proper old football ground (just how I like em!), in the shadow of the huge arc of Wembley Stadium, Vale Farm has not always been a happy hunting ground for Rangers, but with the return of striker, Lewis Toomey, the healthy Risborough following were optimistic as the game got underway. Eight minutes in and a Rangers corner was easily dealt with by the home side before they countered with a shot from just inside the box, high over the bar. Two minutes later and a good move from Wembley ended with a shot wide of the post from distance. Rangers countered and a good ball by Josh Chamberlain was chested down by Toomey before he fired over the bar. Soon after, Curtis Chapple's long throw was headed across the face of the Wembley goalmouth by Toomey, with no one on hand to prod home. Wembley took the lead on 17 minutes when a harmless looking cross from the Rangers' left was missed by defender, Kyrell Palmer, presenting Wembley's Fehmi-Gil with a chance he couldn't miss. Risborough tried to get back on terms with Chapple crossing to Toomey who chested just wide of the front post. Moments after and Rangers' Arel Amu was left stretching as he tried to get on the end of Bangura's cross. Soon after, the Wembley keeper did well to take a dangerous high ball under pressure from Toomey. At the other end Wembley were almost in when a shot across goal from the left was flicked away by Connor Coulson. Five minutes before the break a Rangers corner was swung in and in the melee that followed a big shout by the visitors for a penalty for handball was waved away, leaving the Rangers fans wishing for VAR. Chapple then went wide with a swerving effort and on the stroke of half time Bangura's free kick found Chamberlain whose header went straight to the keeper.

Lewis Horn-Haynes replaced Palmer at half-time and the Rangers winger had an immediate impact when he crossed from the right for Toomey to powerfully head against the inside of the post, Bangura reacting the fastest to bang the ball over the line from six inches to pull Rangers level. Wembley almost hit back with a shot just wide moments later but the second period belonged to Rangers. Lifted by the goal and the formation changes made at half time, it was the visitors that enjoyed more possession, creating good opportunities. Olumide Akinode fired just wide after good work by Tristan Vernal. Then a long Rangers throw-in saw Toomey cleverly set up Bangura, his close range strike deflected for a corner. On the hour mark another long throw from Horn-Haynes was flicked on by Toomey, the ball eventually scrambled to the edge of the box for Toib Adeyemi to fire through a crowd of legs were Bangura got the final touch to divert it past the keeper and give Rangers the lead. The visitors did not sit back and soon after the restart more good work by Toomey allowed Amu to turn neatly and force a good save from the keeper. Amu did get the ball in the net moments later but to no avail as a team-mate had strayed offside. Five minutes later Amu again had a great chance 10 yards out, missing the ball completely with a wild swing. Rangers had their best chance to wrap things up with 14 minutes remaining when Toomey drew the keeper and squared to Bangura, who missed from close range with the goal gaping. Horn-Haynes then had a shot from distance, his effort gathered easily by the keeper and with five minutes of normal time remaining, Joe Fitzgerald's free kick cleared Wembley's wall but was straight at the keeper. Rangers defended well for the remaining minutes with only one worrying moment deep in time added on, a free kick was parried away by Coulson and the resultant corner was eventually gathered by the Rangers keeper following a bit of a scramble. Following a first half edged by Wembley, Rangers were much the better side in the second period and once they got their first goal everything clicked. This was obviously benefited by the change in the formation at half time. Whilst this result has not yet ensured Rangers' safety from the drop it has gone a long way in helping. Our fate is our own hands and a win at North Greenford United on 19th April would put it beyond doubt. Meanwhile, despite a long gap until that league game, we have still to play our quarter-final in the Premier Challenge Trophy when we face Wallingford & Crowmarsh at the Kamtech Stadium on Tuesday 15th April. KO 7.45pm.

Rangers Man of the Match: Lewis Toomey There were plenty of decent performances and Alie Bangura deserves a big mention for his two goals, but Lewis made a huge difference to the Rangers attack with his hold up play, chasing of lost causes and generally giving his marker a huge problem whilst having a hand in both goals and creating other chances too. He showed he is still a class act and why he has been so badly missed by all.
