Ten Man Wokingham make Rangers graft for the win
Bob Rayner reports
Wokingham Town came to the Kamtech Stadium on Saturday sitting mid-table and with Rangers desperate to climb away from the bottom places it looked like an opportunity for Kevin Christou's side to pick up some points. In the end Rangers recorded a worthy second league win in a row for the first time this season as they defeated the visitors by three goals to one. With Wokingham being reduced to ten men after only 16 minutes, credit must go to the 'Sumas', who made Rangers work hard for the win and it was three late goals after Town had taken the lead, coming as legs tired in the notorious Rangers mud, that did the damage. With the pitch already soft and a soft drizzle falling for the duration it was always going to be a difficult surface to play on but both teams did admirably given the conditions to produce a good game. Rangers began brightly with Jeremiah Luwero setting up Joe Fitzgerald for a low shot straight at the Town keeper. Wokingham countered and Rangers keeper, Lamar Johnson punched away a corner. Rangers hit back with Arel Amu fizzing a shot inches past the post. Eight minutes in and Town went close with a low shot just wide before another, long range drive was palmed away by Johnson at full stretch. Good work by Rangers' Amu set Lewis Horn-Haynes away and his dangerous cross was turned over the bar by a Town defender. 16 minutes in and a tackle on Risborough's Kyle Matthew saw Town's Hamblin given a red card. It looked a red to me, but there were plenty of Wokingham folk that didn't see it that way, c'est la vie! The free kick was worked into the box and Matthews eventual strike was well over. Soon after, a good run and cross from Alie Bangura was headed across the face of the visitors goalmouth by Luwero but there were no takers. Rangers thought they'd taken the lead on the half hour mark when Matthews scored from close range following a cross from Awobimpe, but the assistant flagged for a handball and the goal was disallowed. A long range effort from Wokingham was straight at Johnson before Rangers hit back and should have scored following Bangura's cross, Amu and Matthews both denied by two superb point blank saves at close range. On the stroke of half time Town appealed for a handball in the Rangers area but with the ball ricocheting up off a Rangers boot onto hand it was always unlikely to be given. The half ended with a poor clearance driven back past the foot of the Rangers post.
Five minutes into the second period and a great ball from Amu set Bangura through, the tricky winger denied on the goal-line with the keeper beaten. Two follow up shots were also blocked leaving Rangers fans wondering how they had not scored. Town took a surprise lead in the 55th minute when Tristan Vernal's attempted clearance went straight to Town's Curtis 12 yards from goal, his shot creeping in by the far post. Two minutes later and Town's keeper pulled of another good save at the feet of Bangura. Rangers finally equalised out of nothing on 65 minutes as Wokingham defended deep, Fitzgerald passed inside to right back, Awobimpe, who let fly a hard low shot from twenty five yards that nestled into the bottom far corner. A few minutes later and it was Rangers' turn to shout for a penalty as Amu and the Town keeper came together, it didn't look anymore likely a penalty to me than the visitors shout. It mattered little as in the 68th minute an in-swinging corner from Bangura was headed in at the near post by Fitzgerald for the lead. Bangura was a constant threat now and his superb cross was somehow put over the bar from six yards by Matthews with the goal at his mercy. Another brilliant run from Bangura, no mean feat on this surface, was ended with a fine tackle inside the Town area. In the closing minutes Wokingham launched a last desperate attempt for a share of the spoils with a dangerous shot just wide. Skipper Josh Chamberlain made three great headers to clear danger before Rangers made it safe with a goal in time added on, Bangura raced through the middle of a tired defence to calmly slot the ball past the advancing keeper. It was a gallant attempt from the 10 man visitors but Rangers had plenty of chances to win the game. It was a pity that the match officials had to suffer some verbal abuse by visiting supporters and management at the end. There should be no place for it whether you agree with their decisions or not. Match officials have a difficult job to do and can't possibly get it right all of the time but when they make mistakes they do it honestly. Sad to see I'm afraid, especially when one watches the Rugby after the game and admires the discipline shown! Rangers are at home again next Saturday when they take on Virginia Water at the Kamtech Stadium. Kick off is 3pm.
Rangers Man of the Match: Alie Bangura. A skilful display from the wide man and a constant thorn in the side of the visitors defence. Involved in so much of Rangers' attacking moments with some tremendous runs and crosses, and of course, a goal. Exciting to watch!
