Another Draw For Rangers
Bob Rayner reports
Rangers' ninth league draw of the season came away at Holyport on Tuesday where Rangers thankfully ended a recent run of defeats. Holyport sat fifth in the table, just inside the play-off places whilst Rangers were third from bottom. Despite the huge difference in league positions both teams have lost six of their games, with Rangers' large number of drawn matches contributing to their lowly position. The match kicked off with Rangers the brightest early on but with the final ball all too often lacking. Rangers keeper Saunders' first action was to punch away cross in the 15th minute. Holyport came more into the game and soon after, a dangerous cross-shot was deflected for a corner. A few minutes later and a poor clearance by Rangers was fired back, just wide of the post. On 26 minutes Rangers again failed to clear their lines and the recycled ball dropped to 'Port's Seeman who opened the scoring from close range. It was a deserved lead and the home side continued to press as Rangers struggled to keep possession. Five minutes from the break a rare attack from Rangers saw Jellal firedwell wide of the Holyport goal. A minute before the break a good ball from McConnell found Johnson who made a powerful run into the Holyport area where he was brought down for a penalty. There were few complaints and Ntim levelled from the spot and both teams went in level at the break.
A much better second period for the visitors began with Jelall's cross headed over by Johnson. Following a period of stalemate Rangers broke well and a good cut back was rifled high over the bar by Ntim. Holyport followed up minutes later with a wayward volley before Rangers countered and good work from Fountain set up Johnson, who still had work to do before forcing a good save from 'Port's at the near post. Soon after, another strong run from Johnson ended with a good shot blocked at close range, the loose ball falling to Matejko who looked like he must score, but somehow his shot was also blocked just in front of the line before the ball finally came to Fountain who screwed his effort wide. At the other end a Holyport corner was well claimed by Saunders and Rangers were back on the attack with Johnson, who went down under a heavy challenge in the home team area, Rangers' shouts for a penalty waved away. In time added on the Holyport keeper fumbled a high ball under pressure but Fitzgerald couldn't quite reach the loose ball. A last second corner for the home team was easily held by Saunders and at the final whistle honours were even. In a game of two halves, Holyport shading the first half, Rangers the second, a fair result, but one that, with Broadfields winning, now puts Rangers second bottom. They have a tough visit to third placed Bedfont Sports on Saturday and manager Mark Jones will need best team available if they are to take anything from the game.
Rangers Man of the Match: Josh Chamberlain. Once again his quality came through. Held it together at the back with a display of experience, ability and determination. Decision making is key and he rarely makes a wrong decision.
