Mistakes costly as Rangers lose out to fellow strugglers
Bob Rayner reports
Fortunately (it would seem) I was not in attendance at this game, hence my late report and vagueness. However, in what turned out to be skipper Ben Sturgess' last game before transferring to Penn & Tylers Green, it was not one for the normally reliable Sturge to remember with fondness. After only 15 seconds Sturgess' misplaced back pass found the back of his own net to give fellow strugglers, Berks County, the lead. Kwesi Ntim levelled for Rangers just six minutes later however and things brightened for the visitors when on 32 minutes the industrious Abdullah Jellal gave them the lead and by half time things looked promising.
County fought back and in the 60th minute Hobbs levelled for the home team after another mistake from Sturgess. Josh Keane-Quinlivan restored Rangers' lead eight minutes later and it stayed that way until the 80th minute when Sturgess completed a miserable afternoon personally, giving away a penalty as County's Hobbs made it three each. The home side stole the initiative, scoring a winner in injury time to earn the points and resign Rangers to wonder how they could have led twice and still lost. This defeat means that the next game at Virginia Water is a must win if Rangers are to avoid being in a relegation battle.
Finally, it was a sad way for Sturge to end his time with Rangers where he has been a fantastic player. He has always given everything for the team. Our loss will be Penn & Tylers gain!
