A WORTHY DRAW

Ten man Rangers show fighting spirit as they draw again

Bob Rayner reports

Holyport arrived at the Kamtech Stadium sitting in third place in the league after 11 games and they showed why after just two minutes, when Ocansey was allowed too much room in the box to turn and score from 10 yards. It was a poor start from the home side and one that belied Rangers record of the third best defence in the division. The expected onslaught never came however and it was Rangers that had the better chances despite being reduced to ten men 10 minutes into the second half. Five minutes in and Rangers should have equalised when Cole's fierce drive was parried straight to Otudeko 10 yards from goal, the Rangers striker firing straight at the prone visiting keeper with the goal at his mercy. Two minutes later and Otudeko was again in the action, showing clever feet before firing just wide. A spell of midfield attrition followed before Otudeko cleverly found Fountain who looked to be fouled, Rangers shouts for a penalty waved away by the referee. Rangers continued to press for an equaliser and Chapple's long throw caused problems with Fountain and Sturgess just unable to find the finishing touch. Two minutes before half time Risborough's Jellal was put through and as he went to shoot he was tripped by a desperate lunge, this time the referee having no hesitation in pointing to the spot; Keane-Quinlivan sending the keeper the wrong way to put Rangers deservedly level.

The second period began with another long throw by Chapple scrambled clear as Rangers threatened. Rangers thought they had gone ahead three minutes later when a ball in from the left was met at the back post by Robinson a yard out, the Rangers man looked like he couldn't miss but somehow the ball stayed out in the melee on the line before falling to Keane-Quinlivan, whose flick then looked to have crossed the line before being hooked away, leaving the Rangers fans wishing for some goal-line technology. A few minutes later another great chance for the home side fell to Chapple following a corner, the Rangers fullback unable to dig it out from his feet in the six yard box and Holyport hacked clear. On 55 minutes Risborough's Jellal was sent off for a second yellow card for a foul; there could be no arguments. With Rangers reduced to 10 men the home crowd expected the worst, but it was not to be and Rangers equipped themselves well, with Holyport causing few problems to a defence brilliantly marshalled by skipper, Sturgess. In fact, Rangers continued to press and looked comfortable for much of the remainder of the game. Keane-Quinlivan showed some neat touches before firing over from the edge of the box. At the other end Holyport pounced on a loose pass and a long range effort dropped well wide with Rangers keeper, Saunders, out of his goal. Good play from Keane-Quinlivan soon followed, as he set up Walsh, who fired over from 20 yards. Not long after another long range effort from the visitors was high and wide. In the closing minutes Rangers substitute, Luwero, broke clear only to be denied by an excellent tackle. The same player almost made Holyport pay for a mistake following a poor free kick deep in their half, only for him to slip as he shaped to shoot with the keeper out of position. Another neat move from Rangers soon followed, Keane-Quinlivan shooting over the bar from 18 yards. Deep in injury time Rangers survived a scare as a shot flashed across the face of the goal just missing the far post. The last act of note came when a Holyport free kick was planted comfortably into the safe hands of Saunders. This was as close to a winning draw as one could get, mainly because of the sending off. Rangers were the better side for much of the game and but for the want of some composure in front of goal, should have won against a good side. All of the back four were in excellent form and both Cole and Keane-Quinlivan showed some real quality in midfield. Fountain battled hard up top against some experienced defenders whilst Otudeko also showed that there is more to come from him with some skilful moments as the team looked as though they are headed in the right direction. Another test follows on Tuesday evening when Holmer Green will prove a dangerous and determined opponent in the League Cup, KO 7.45 at the Kamtech Stadium. Next Saturday Rangers are away to Reading City in the league.

Rangers Man of the Match: Ben Sturgess. There were several candidates in a full hearted performance but this was a game made for our veteran skipper, who led his team superbly, showing by example how to battle against the odds.
