Rangers winning run abruptly comes to an end

Rangers travelled to Champions elect Leighton Town on Saturday on the back of an 8-game winning run and now with an outside chance of finishing second.

With both teams having many players who have or should play at higher levels there was great anticipation of a really good game enjoyed by a bumper Bank Holiday crowd of over 600.

From the opening exchanges there was a very obvious display on styles Leighton being very direct trying to turn the Risborough backline and the visitors trying to get the ball down and play through. Leighton of course have the countries top marksman in Leon Lobjoit and he proved to be a thorn in Rangers side.

Rangers had the better of the early part of the game pinning Leighton back in their half with Leightons threat being from set pieces and corners they had forced. Leighton had the first chance when Lobjoit showed good pace to beat Dobson his cross headed straight at Hunt. Risborough responded with good work down the right from Wyllie who exchanged passes with Miller, his shot blocked by good defending. Millers’ tenacity was troubling the home defence and it was a real physical battle despite the obvious size difference.

Leighton should have scored when a long punt forward from the goalkeeper was flicked on to Lobjoit he chopped inside Robinson and shot producing a fine save from Hunt. Rangers responded when Odumosu won the ball down the left cut inside the full back and was brought down which looked like a clear penalty, not given. Rangers then enjoyed a good spell forcing the hosts back, Leighton also had a penalty shout when Lobjoit was bundled over by Sturgess although this one not as obvious at the one the other end. Leighton had another chance when a corner from the left was headed goal bound and was tipped over by Hunt.

Rangers should have opened the scoring, good work from Wyllie down the right fed Odumosu whose pass put Miller through, Leighton's keeper producing an excellent save when Miller should have scored. From this the ball was recycled again by Wyllie and his cross was headed goal bound by Odumosu only to see it crash back off the cross bar.

Fine margins can win games and in the 37th minute a scramble in the Rangers goal mouth was cleared the shot back from close distance hit Odumosu, the referee harshly judging it was handball and a penalty to Leighton. If we base it on hands in an unnatural position, his hands were inside his body, and he couldn't do anything. Given the decision the other end it was poor from the referee. Lobjoit dispatched the spot kick 1-0 Leighton.

The second half saw Rangers much more on the back foot as if the injustice had rocked them, Leighton continued to pump balls into the box with Lobjoit causing all kind of problems with his pace.

The next goal was going to have a huge effect on the outcome of the game, and it was Leighton who got it.

The second goal came which was really poor by Rangers a ball down the left was weakly dealt with, both Wyllie and Robinson allowing a cross into the box Lobjoit went down under a challenge and with both Urquhart and Dobson static, whilst on the floor Lobjoit flicked the ball goal wards beating Hunt on the far post. It was a great bit of improvisation from the striker, but really poor from Rangers point of view.

With Leighton's tails up Risborough looked like the fight had been knocked out of them offering very little going forward and just defending the constant long balls. Leighton were winning second balls and looked like they were the team who could score again. They did so but again in controversial circumstances. A break down the right saw Lobjoit race clear but clearly offside, his shot was parried by Hunt and the rebound smashed in from the left-hand side. 3-0 Leighton.

In truth Leighton's second half display was worthy of winning the game, 3 -0 was harsh on Rangers but they can only have themselves to blame for an under par second half display. We now face Biggleswade United at home for our second bank holiday fixture.

Rangers man of the match Ricky Miller Took the battle to Leighton and put his body on the line for the team.
