Home win for Rangers as they take the spoils against St. Panteleimon
Bob Rayner reports
Rangers followed up from their midweek win at Tring Athletic with a fine home win on Saturday over a very good St. Panteleimon. For the first time this season Rangers' manager, Mark Eaton, was able to field the same starting line-up for two games in a row, opting for the same starting eleven as Tuesday and it paid off with an excellent all-round display from the home side. Following a Guard of Honour, provided by the Risborough Rangers Under 13 Girls, the match kicked off to a hight tempo. The game was held up after five minutes however, when Rangers' winger, Sean Coles collided with the Saint's keeper in a fifty-fifty challenge, the visiting keeper needing some extensive treatment. When the game again got underway Rangers were forced to defend deep against a potent strike force with both Josh Urquhart and Ellis Hercules, in the middle of the Rangers defence, making important interceptions. Rangers hit back with Asher Yearwood denied by a defender's knee after good work in the opposing box. Rangers' goalkeeper, Sam Ashmead was forced into a good tackle on the edge of his area, with Urquhart tidying up the loose ball. Rangers took the lead on 24 minutes after good work down the left. The ball came to Gavin James who coolly wrong footed his marker to score with a neat shot into the far corner. Skipper Urquhart was again on hand to block a dangerous shot as St. Panteleimon threatened. Hercules mirrored his skipper shortly after with a fine tackle before Rangers rallied. A good spell for the home side followed with Urquhart going just wide with a header from the excellent Keiron Schmidt's cross. Both of Rangers' full backs, on the right Jamie Robinson and the left, Rico Greco, were causing problems for the Saint's back line with their runs. James should have got a second when firing wide from a great position, but he made up for it on the stroke of halftime when he created space wide of the goal to square the ball across the face of the goal for Yearwood to score from close range.
Eight minutes into the second half and the 182 crowd were celebrating what they thought was a third for Rangers after Hercules rose at the far post to powerfully head home a Schmidt corner. There was disappointment however as the referee ruled his effort out for blocking on the keeper, it looked harsh on the home side. Seven minutes later and Saints reduced the deficit after their skipper, Monti, scored with a looping cross-shot. The goal lifted the visitors and Hercules was forced into a last-ditch tackle, the loose ball falling kindly for Ashmead. Moments later and a neat move across the Rangers' box ended with the ball fired over. At the other end Schmidt's near post free kick was flicked just wide by Liam Enver Marum. Saints countered and Robinson did well to force the former Wycombe Wanderers striker, Morgan, to hit into the side netting. Saint Panteleimon began to run out of ideas as Rangers midfielder, Ben Sturgess, took control, urging his team on and organising those around him. Saints last chance of the game was a header well wide, before Rangers went looking for a third. Nine minutes from the end and Coles did well to cross, the Saints keeper athletically nicking the ball off the head of Enver-Marum. Schmidt's shot soon after was easily dealt with. Alex Kedzierski, finally back after a long layoff, joined the fray and soon fizzed a low shot past the upright. In the final minute Rangers should have sewn it up after Schmidt closed in from the right. He could have scored himself but unselfishly squared to Coles who took too long, and the chance was gone. Some good game management by the home side, during time added on, ensured that Rangers took all three points. After a poor start to their league campaign, Rangers have now taken 13 points from a possible 15 in their last five league matches, winning four and drawing one. It's still early days but with the full back and goalkeeping problems seemingly sorted, plus the return to fitness of Schmidt, Coles and now Kedzierski, Rangers are starting to look a little more like they were last season. Hopefully the good form can continue when they travel to North London to face Cockfosters in another league fixture next Saturday.
Rangers Man of the Match: Keiron Schmidt. A really difficult one to choose, with Keiron's midfield partner, Sturge, having a great game too. Credit also to both centre backs, Josh and Ellis, both looking back to their best. Also, up front Gavin and Ash look like a strike partnership to be reckoned with. However, for the second game in a row Keiron gets the nod with another scintillating display.
