Bob Rayner reports from the B.E.P. Stadium
Two goals from top scorer Marcus Wyllie and another from Liam Enver-Marum sealed the win as Rangers progressed in the FA Vase at the expense of Long Melford. Despite the three-one score-line however, Rangers didn't have it all their own way and can thank Jack Brooker, in the Rangers goal, who made two brilliant saves in the first half when game was still in the balance. Early on Sean Coles couldn't quite reach Enver-Marum's cross at the far post as Rangers threatened. Soon after the Suffolk based side tested Jack Brooker from long range. Rangers hit back with Enver-Marum's shot on the angle was parried by Walker in the Long Melford goal, with the keeper grabbing the ball at the second attempt. Walker again saved well from Wyllie after the winger cut in from the left to shoot. Rangers should have taken the lead after Wyllie picked out Enver-Marum in the six yard box but somehow the big striker sliced his effort wide when it looked easier to score! From the goal-kick Long Melford countered and after some neat play Brooker produced the first of his top drawer saves to den the visitors. Rangers then broke and forced Long Melford into some desperate defending as Bertie Squire-Adams and Sean Coles had shots well blocked. Long Melford again threatened after intercepting a poor pass. The visitors raced down their left to cross, before a superb volley was tipped away brilliantly by Brooker. The danger still hadn't passed, with the resultant corner toed inches wide of the upright. Rangers rallied with Wyllie volleying over after good work by Enver-Marum. Wyllie next brought a fine save from Walker following some clever football from the home team. Long Melford countered and Brooker raced from his line to save at his opponents feet. With five minutes to the break Wyllie looked clean through, but Walker got their a fraction of a second before him to whack the ball upfield. On the stroke of half time Rangers took the lead after Wyllie was fouled just outside the Long Melford area. The same player picked himself up and curled a superb free kick over the wall and into the top corner to put Rangers ahead.
Risborough started the second half in lively fashion and looked to have doubled their lead five minutes after the restart. Wyllie's pass over the top found Coles who then set up Enver-Marum to finish well, before the referee indicated that there had been a hand-ball in the build up. The disappointment was short lived however, as Rangers scored a second three minutes later, when Asher Yearwood slid a great ball through to Enver-Marum who raced clear before squaring to Wyllie for a simple tap in. Another three minutes and it was three, with Yearwood again having a hand, racing through several challenges before sliding the ball to Enver-Marum. The Rangers striker still had a lot to do as he raced past his marker and fairly smashed the ball into the net, giving the keeper no chance. Long Melford tried to rally and Aaron Jewell was forced into a timely tackle to prevent a goal-scoring opportunity before Kieron Schmidt headed the subsequent corner away at the back post. Rangers were playing with confidence now with Schmidt showing some clever skills in the middle of the park. Coles then had a shot well blocked before Sam Pekun was put in by Ben Sturgess, only to see his effort deflected. In between, a long range effort hardly troubled Brooker. A good win by Sturgess set up another attack for the home side with Wyliie and Pekun combining well before the latter shot weakly at the keeper. Long Melford finished strongly as Rangers looked to sit on their lead, firstly breaking quickly from a corner and shooting just over. The Suffolk team did get a deserved consolation with four minutes remaining after a searching freekick was turned in with the faintest of touches and the faintest whiff of offside. But it would be wrong to criticise, as the officials had very good games overall and Rangers had enough of a cushion to see themselves into the next round. Rangers almost added a fourth in the final minute when Pekun raced on to a booming headed clearance by Josh Urquhart to fire inches wide of the post.
Rangers now face two difficult home league games with Flackwell Heath the visitors on Tuesday night, kick-off 7.45pm and next Saturday third placed Hapenden Town visit the BEP Stadium, kick-off 3pm.
Rangers Man of the Match (Chosen by Match Day Sponsor, Gary Sommerford of Larus Consulting Ltd): Josh Urquhart. For the second game running Josh picks up the Man of the Match award with another towering performance. The centre back looked comfortable on the ball and was rarely troubled, dealing with his aerial and ground challenges with a cool effectiveness and turning defence into attack with some telling passes.
