Sad News: Richard ‘Woody’ Woodward

It is with deep sadness that the club announces the passing of our long-serving Chairman, Richard Woodward, who suffered a sudden heart attack early Sunday morning at the age of 77.

Affectionately known as ‘Woody,’ Richard dedicated 27 years to the club as Chairman, shaping Risborough Rangers into the respected Step 5 club it is today. Originally from Peterborough, he moved to Princes Risborough in 1986 while working as a Civil Servant at RAF Naphill. A lifelong Peterborough United supporter and former goalkeeper, he quickly became involved with Risborough Rangers Juniors, coaching both of his sons, Andrew and Steven, who later played for the senior teams. Over the years, he took on numerous roles, including Treasurer and Club Secretary, always leading with dedication and passion.

Richard’s leadership was instrumental in the club’s progress, overseeing key developments such as the installation of floodlights in 2012 and the construction of a new stand in 2022. His vision extended beyond infrastructure - he played a key role in shaping the club’s success on the pitch, appointing managers who shared his ambition, leading to the club’s recent rise. He was never one to shy away from hands-on work, whether helping on the pitch, serving in the tea bar, or hosting club quizzes for over 20 years.

Perhaps Richard’s greatest legacy is the culture he instilled in the club. Anyone who met him would say he was one of the nicest, most humble people you could ever meet - selflessly giving to others, never seeking the limelight, and remaining steadfast in both victory and defeat.

Beyond football, Richard was an active member of the community. He volunteered at St. Mary’s Church, tended to his three allotments, served as Treasurer for the Allotments Society, and was a flower judge for the Oxon & Bucks Horticultural Society.
Richard’s passing leaves an enormous void in the club and the local community. He touched so many lives and will be deeply missed by past and present players, officials, supporters and all who had the privilege of knowing him. The club is committed to ensuring that his vision for the future is realised and that his legacy lives on for generations to come.

Our thoughts are with his wife, Joy, his sons Andrew and Steven, and his grandchildren at this difficult time.
