RANGERS ADD TO THE WARES WOES

Risborough bounce back with home win

Bob Rayner reports

Rangers picked up an important home win on Saturday as they overcame a stubborn Edgware & Kingsbury in this league fixture. The visitors sat second bottom before the game and their manager resigned the night before, yet despite this turmoil they made Rangers fight all the way, the final four-one result proving much closer than the score-line might suggest. Rangers fielded new centre back, Austen Edwards, alongside skipper Ben Sturgess and Alfie Corrick as Rangers opted for a back three. The home side began brightly and in the first minute good work by Gerald Muchechetere and Curtis Chapple created a cross that Lewis Toomey volleyed over when well placed. Moments later Toomey did well to cross for Muchechetere, the ball cut out by a desperate lunge. On four minutes Chapple fired into the side netting after a good run and on seven minutes Rangers took the lead; Toomey raced onto a good ball from Fitzgerald, his first shot was well saved and an acrobatic kick by the same player looped over the keeper, finding Chapple at the far post to slam home. 10 minutes later and Edwards collected a loose clearance and volleyed straight at the visiting keeper from 25 yards. 22 minutes in and Edgware registered a first shot, firing wide from distance. Another fine pass by Fitzgerald to Toomey, this time the Rangers striker lobbing the keeper and the bar. With 25 minutes played Edgware equalised with a rare break, the ball finding Effa on the Rangers left. The winger looked a good yard and a half offside, but with play waived on he raced through to score. The goal shook Rangers and Edgware forced Dave Saunders into a great save two minutes later. Soon after Saunders again saved well in a one versus one, smothering well. Rangers regained their composure and Muchechetere headed over a good cross by Archie Morris, and Muchechetere again, bundled his way through a crowd of players, scuffing his shot at the crucial moment. A minute from the break and Saunders tipped a header wide at his near post with Rangers clearing the resultant corner.

The second period began with Saunders making an excellent save from close range and from the following the corner the Rangers keeper again saved well from a header. Risborough countered and Toomey had the ball in the back of the visitors net, but the goal was ruled out for a foul in the build up. Rangers regained the lead on 56 minutes from a corner, Sturgess' powerful header was parried by the Edgware keeper and Toomey was on hand to smash home the loose ball. Muchechetere should have added a third soon after when Chapple picked him out with a good pass, the former somehow fluffing his chance with the goal at his mercy. The visitors rallied and a good run from Effa caused problems, his shot flying over. With 15 minutes remaining Edgware looked to have a good shout for a penalty turned down after a clumsy challenge just inside the box. It looked a penalty but that's football and it could be argued that it cancelled out the offside goal in the first half! A couple of half chances came and went for the visitors before Rangers almost hit back with a corner, Edwards' header straight at the visiting keeper. The game was put out of Edgware's reach in the 81st minute, Toomey raced away down the right, beat his man and slid the ball across to Muchchetere, this time the Rangers frontman making no mistake, sliding home from 12 yards. In 44th minute Saunders made two good saves in quick succession to keep the lead at two. At the other end a good cross by Lochlan Colquhoun was headed over by Toomey and moments later substitute George Callie turned cleverly just inside the box, his powerful strike tipped over by the Edgware keeper. More good work by Callie and Abdullah Jellal forced a Rangers corner, the kick headed straight at the keeper by Edwards. Debutant Callie made the game safe deep in time added on after he slammed home Toomey's pass following more good work from the Rangers centre forward. A much needed boost for Rangers with some good performances all round against a resilient Edgware & Kingsbury side that never gave up. Good to see Alfie Corrick and Curtis Chapple back after missing the MK Irish game and a great cameo for youth team player George Callie who added some real gusto up top. Another big game next Saturday as Rangers travel to Northamptonshire to face Long Buckby in the FA Vase.

Rangers Man of the Match: Lewis Toomey. It is not always easy to pick a man of the match, especially after a good team performance. Dave Saunders made some important saves at crucial moments, Fitzy had another very good game, Archie gets better each match and Sturge is Sturge, but it has to be Lewis. Goals win games and he not only scored one, he set up three more. Lewis' ability is never in question but even when things aren't going well he never stops trying. A fantastic contribution today!
